Montana: why buyers in the Big Sky State want small ‘ranchettes’

Montana’s wide open spaces have long been central to its allure. The so-called "Big Sky State" is the fourth largest in the US but, with little more than 1m people, its population ranks sixth from bottom. All that space, plus Montana’s boundless ranches, appeals to movie stars and billionaire businessmen seeking seclusion, from actors Michael Keaton and Dennis Quaid to Google chairman Eric Schmidt. After all, a ranch surrounded by hundreds of acres can help keep prying eyes at bay.
