A Journey Across Time and Place

In September, I had the privilege of undertaking a 200-mile transect across the Reserve and surrounding lands with several of our Board members and project collaborators. If you haven’t seen it yet, here is a short video http://www.americanprairie.org/the-transect/ showcasing the landscape your gifts are helping assemble through the eyes of several people who joined me on our two-week journey.

Everywhere on the landscape, the results of our supporters’ generosity are evident. This year alone, donors helped acquire three additional pieces of land, bringing the Reserve’s total size to 306,000 acres of private and leased public land. That’s cause to celebrate!

Yet, as I pondered the wide open vistas, I couldn’t help but wonder if early explorers like Lewis and Clark would have gone to bed hungry without the vast numbers of wildlife that once filled the land. It reminded me once again why this project is so important. While there is still much work to be done, the support of people like you gives me confidence that we’ll one day see wildlife returning in abundance.
