Service-learning programs tie community service to academic learning, while social and emotional learning initiatives teach important relationship building and decision making skills.

The paper, entitled “Making the Case for Social and Emotional Learning and Service-Learning,” outlines the components of successful programs, talks about what states are doing to integrate social and emotional learning and service-learning into academic standards, and offers recommendations for dealing with challenges such as fragmentation of existing initiatives, accountability demands, and teacher overload.

The report is available at http://www.ecs.org/clearinghouse/44/04/4404.pdf.
