Lauded late-work program kicks off at Skyview High

If you have a child at Skyview High and get a text from school warning that they’re in the ICU, you can probably skip a trip to the hospital. It’s the student’s academic performance that’s slated for an intensive care unit.

Some teachers at Skyview are rolling out a homework tracking system that texts or emails parents when their kid misses an assignment and gives that student the rest of the semester to turn the assignment in. The program, branded "Power of ICU," is the same one that Laurel High School used last year and credits, in part, for an astronomical increase in graduation rates.

When math teacher Matt Glasson started at Skyview four years ago as a long-term substitute, he was struck by students "apathy" about turning in homework.

"I knew something had to change," he said. "I remember if I didn’t turn in an assignment (in high school), I was crucified by my parents."
