A new form of transportation for Montana- "Scooterville Montana" opens in Missoula

Scooterville Montana, Montana’s first and presently
only full-service scooter shop celebrated its
Grand Opening this weekend in Missoula.

Scooterville Montana is the brainchild of Sentinel
High School teachers Dan Kucera and Gary Stein.
Scooterville Montana is the exclusive western Montana
dealer for Derbi and Bajaj motor scooters, both
leaders in an emerging American marketplace.
Scooterville Montana is located at 138 W. Broadway, on
the N.E. corner of Broadway and Ryman, across the
street from the county courthouse.

Hours of operation
through the rest of the school year will generally be
11:00 A.M. – 7:00 P.M., Monday through Thursday, 11:00
A.M. – 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, and closed on Sundays.
Hours will be expanded in the summertime. Call
721-ZOOM, (721-9666), to leave a message, and/or hear
revised hours of operation.

Travis Schramm, a senior at Sentinel High School will
be head shop mechanic. Schramm is planning to attend
the University of Montana part-time in the fall while
managing Scooterville Montana. Schramm s experience
racing and working on snowmobiles and assorted other
recreational and racing vehicles made him an obvious
candidate for the position. Schramm’s skills
translate easily to the 2- and 4-stroke engines used
by Derbi and Bajaj scooters.

Scooters provide safe, economical and environmentally
friendly transportation. Scooters are classified in
Montana as motorcycles, but they differ in some
significant ways. Scooter’s working parts are in the
rear of the machine and are covered, protecting the
rider from the leg burns, which are not uncommon to
motorcycle riding. Scooters have a "walk through"
design, essentially and open space between the saddle
and the steering column. Scooters have small tires
and wheels than their larger cousins. Scooters
generally have smaller engines than motorcycles, and
are commonly available in a 50cc variety, though they
may range well up to 200cc.

Scooterville Montana was provided significant
financial and business assistance by the Montana
Community Development Corporation. MCDC was very
supportive in the business plan, cash flow/cash needs
analysis, and ultimately, in providing a startup loan
to Scooterville Montana. Steve Grover and Larry
Williams, loan fund manager, were particularly
involved in providing the necessary expert support for
this project.

Bajaj scooters are manufactured in India. Bajaj is
the largest 2-wheel manufacturer in the world. The
two models available in the U.S.A. are the Chetak and
the Legend. Both are 4-stroke, 145cc, 4-speed manual
transmission scooters. Bajaj scooters are
steel-framed and follow the "classic" scooter design.
Derbi scooters are manufactured in Barcelona, Spain
and are 2-stroke engines with automatic transmission.
The Derbi scooters range in size from 50cc to the
150cc Boulevard model.
