Idaho business majors to get wireless laptops

University of Idaho business students will have new laptop computers in their backpacks next fall as a school requirement.

The computers will provide them with market quotes and spreadsheets, as well as information for other courses.

The university’s College of Business and Economics will issue the IBM wireless laptops to all first-semester juniors enrolled in the Integrated Business Curriculum. By fall 2004, most upper-division business students will have them.

The ThinkPads include DVD/CD drives and come loaded with business-oriented software.

It is the first such program in a public university in Idaho but one of many nationwide to offer a "laptop" campus.

The technology initiative is meant to promote independent learning and encourage greater communication with professors, school officials said.

The package provides insurance for the computers and maintenance on campus. In return, students pay a course fee of $500 each semester and are allowed to purchase the computer for $1 at the end of the two-year contract.

The college chose the student fee and purchase-option method because it puts all students on equal footing.
