State of Montana chief economist Barbara Wagner takes a stab at humanizing wage gap

State chief economist Barbara Wagner has her work cut out for her when it comes to conveying data about women in the work place.

Taking a stab at humanizing economics in an update for business leaders at the Comfort Inn on Wednesday, she explained that in Montana, women still earn 68 percent of what men earn in the same jobs- compared to 71 percent nationwide.

Kathy Boelter, Montana Chamber Foundation president and president of Arrow Solutions Group http://www.arrowsolutionsgroup.com/ in Billings, who introduced speakers at the Butte update, said she wants to recruit more women for high-end tech jobs, but that it’s a slow process since most men study science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), leading to higher-paying upper-end engineering-type jobs.

Wagner joined stalwart economists Patrick Barkey and Paul Polzin of the University of Montana Bureau of Business and Economic Research http://www.bber.umt.edu/ in making the rounds to seven cities to give updates. She works for the Montana Department of Labor and Industry.
