Montana Governor Bullock addresses Native American Development Corporation

Citing barriers such as the lack of access to capital and reservation unemployment rates that are often three times the state average, Gov. Steve Bullock on Wednesday told a Billings economic development conference "there is still so much work to be done" to improve the economy in Montana’s Indian Country.

"State government cannot be that obstacle for the right of Indian people to thrive," Bullock told the Native American Development Corporation’s Seventh Annual Economic Development and Procurement Conference being held at the Northern Hotel. "I stand ready to work with you to strengthen opportunities in our economy, and I won’t be standing alone."

His partner is Jason Smith, the state director of Indian Affairs and an enrolled member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, whom Bullock presented with a plaque for his work over the past two years.
