Beyond minimum – Missoula labor advocates say better wages are just a start

Alex Taft, a Missoula City Council member, recently made waves with a proposal to raise the minimum wage for full-time city workers to $15 an hour as part of its 2016 budget.

Councilman Alex Taft says he was inspired by the nationwide Fight for $15 campaign, which has marked victories in Seattle and Los Angeles earlier this year. The Missoula City Council voted to defer the action at a June 24 meeting, but Taft feels "pretty good" about the idea and says he’ll push it forward for discussion again soon.

Local labor advocates applaud Taft’s sentiment, but say there are other worthy goals they’d like to accomplish first. Wages are an important issue, especially in a state with some of the lowest average incomes in the country, but there are other pressing problems, says Mark Anderlik, president of the Missoula Area Central Labor Council.
