Disparity in how Helena school bond would allocate funds fuels fears of consolidation

At Jim Darcy Elementary, situated near the corner of Lincoln Road and Montana Avenue roughly 15 minutes from downtown, two young elementary school boys rolled a cart full of raw ceramics down the hall.

It was shortly after the end of the school day and the halls were still scattered with the occasional student and teacher.

As Brian Cummings, the school principal, walked toward the door to a bustling crowd of students awaiting pickup, he stopped the boys.

"Where are you headed?" he asked amiably.

"The bathroom," one of the boys responded.

The boys bathroom, Cummings explained, was where the school kiln lived. Jim Darcy purchased the kiln years ago with a grant from the Helena Education Foundation, but as the second-smallest of 11 Helena elementary schools, yet having the third largest enrollment, there was simply no where to put it. So the kiln went in the back of the boys bathroom.
