State budget reductions in Montana could lead to extended vacancies, layoffs

State budget reductions during the next two years may force some agencies to leave positions vacant for extended periods, not fill positions after retirements or lay off employees, said Dan Villa, the governor’s budget director.

The state allocation for employee costs across most agencies will be 6 percent lower for this biennium than it was three years ago, Villa said. The 6 percent dip results from decisions made during the last two sessions.
