Despite shortfalls, insurance company execs collect large bonuses – Rate increases likely

Health insurance companies that sold policies on the Montana Internet "marketplace" reported some substantial losses in 2014 – but that didn’t stop their executives from collecting some big bonuses.

Patricia Hemingway Hall, the head of Health Care Service Corp., which is the Illinois-based parent firm of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana, received a $10.4 million bonus for 2014, on top of her $1.25 million salary, for total compensation of $11.7 million.

Health insurers reporting big losses on `marketplace’ policies; rate hikes likely

Health insurers selling individual policies on Montana’s Internet "marketplace" are reporting substantial losses for last year — and saying rate increases on marketplace policies are likely in store for next year.

Health-insurance companies had to guess at the cost of this new market, and it appears they guessed low, leading to losses in 2014.
