$1M grant could help Billings address downtown crime, transient population

A million-dollar federal grant designed to pay for innovative community efforts to reduce crime and the transient population could be coming Billings’ way.

Ray Porrello, executive assistant for member relations for the Downtown Billings Alliance, said Tuesday he has submitted the application for a Byrne Criminal Justice Innovations Grant. Grants are awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice and are given to communities "who are doing what we are doing — working on an innovative program that brings collaboration to address a crime issue," Porrello said.

"We are the poster child for this grant," he said. "Everything they want, we have been doing for the last six months. I think we have a decent chance of getting it."
