Google’s gentle ‘Shark Tank’ tests start-up talent

Google is justifiably known as an idea factory.

Beyond search, there are the company’s deep dives into driverless cars, computer glasses, connected home products and balloon-based Web access. The message: our big, PhD-stamped brains have it all covered.

So it’s a bit surprising to walk into a packed auditorium here on the Google campus to find a dozen young non-Google entrepreneurs from around the country pitching their startups to judges eager to make them the next new, new thing.

This second annual event is called Google for Entrepreneurs Demo Day, and it resembles a kinder, gentler Shark Tank, where no one is harsh or brutal. Call it Goldfish Tank.
