Building Social Capital: An Important Role of the Arts

Starting a children’s story hour. Going to a Contra dance. Singing in a choir. These are just a few of the myriad of cultural activities that contribute to building community social capital.

In an article entitled “Building Social Capital: An Important Role of the Arts,” Jonathan Katz, Executive Director of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, calls on state arts agency leaders and the professional arts community to look for connections between their work and activities recognized as rich in social capital.

The article appears in the Southern Arts Federation’s Southarts newsletter, at http://www.southarts.org/download/SouthArtsJanFeb03.pdf
