More than $4.4M generated from taxes on wind production across Wyoming in last fiscal year

More than $4.4 million was generated from taxes on wind production across Wyoming in the last fiscal year, according to the state Department of Revenue.

Albany, Carbon, Converse, Laramie, Natrona and Uinta counties share in $2.7 million with the state’s portion of the revenue at slightly more than $1.7 million.

Loyd Drain, executive director for Wyoming Infrastructure Authority, said wind generation taxes benefit state and local governments, but at a cost.

"Wyoming wind is prolific," Drain said. "I think we would see more interest in developing Wyoming’s world-class wind, but for this tax."

However, there are positives, Drain added.

Wyoming is outcompeting Montana on wind energy production, and the corresponding public revenue we could be receiving to fund our schools and services.
