Dillon rally brings estimated 300 people to their feet – "Tell lawmakers that education matters"

Speakers brought about 300 people to their feet at a rally here Tuesday night with passionate calls for bipartisan backing of public education this legislative session.

Democratic Lt. Gov. Angela McLean gave a fiery pitch for Gov. Steve Bullock’s top education initiatives, Republican state Rep. Jeff Welborn of Dillon encouraged folks to stay engaged in session issues, and others asked for continued support of public schools.

"Tell lawmakers that education matters," McLean told the crowd at an elementary school gymnasium.

The rally was organized by Sam Telling, a freshman at Beaverhead County High School, who said public education should not be a partisan issue. Part of that message was sent, he said, by getting McLean and Welborn to attend the event.

"Public education should be an issue that paves the way to collaboration, whereas a lot of issues are already very partisan," he said.
