Hardware problem took Montana state computer system offline

Access to Montana state government’s computer system in Helena got knocked out by a hardware problem Wednesday evening for about 10 hours, state computer officials said.

Ron Baldwin, the state’s chief information officer, said the system started having problems at 4:22 p.m., as people couldn’t access state websites and databases or use email for state employees.

State information technology staff discovered problems with a computer that controlled access to a data storage system at the state’s data center east of the Capitol, he added.

The manufacturer of the equipment, NetApp, and state staff worked to isolate and solve the problem, Baldwin said.
