"So who’s coming in with prototypes?" the president asks. "Is it startups? Can anybody walk through the door? If I call up and say, ‘You know what, I got a great idea for a new thingamajig?’ "

"Yeah, that’s actually how it usually works," Allan says. He earned his engineering degrees at Boise State, and then worked for two local companies before returning to manage the lab in 2013.
