University of Montana creates new energy-efficient data center

"It’s the type of thing that just demonstrates the progress that were making here at UM." UM’s Chief Information Officer, Matt Riley

A new data center on the University of Montana campus is the only of its kind in higher education. NBC Montana got a look inside the innovative center.

It took four years of brainstorming and careful planning to put together a $2.6 million data center on the University of Montana’s campus. The center houses the university’s computer systems, its servers and digital servers. It’s critical because not only is it the brain center for UM but it’s also a backup.

UM’s Chief Information Officer, Matt Riley, said it’s a big step up from the old data center.

"It was like an underground cave with a river running through it," said Riley.
