2015 University of Montana Big Data Classes Taught by the Mathematical Sciences Department

In the spring semester of 2015 a number of courses in Big Data will be taught by Mathematical Sciences Department at the University of Montana (additional information may be found on the UM "course search" web page: http://www.umt.edu/academicplanner/coursesearch/search.html

as well as by contacting Professor and Chair of Mathematical Sciences Department Leonid Kalachev [email protected] and Professor Brian Steele [email protected]

The course M491-01/50 "Theoretical Basics of Big Data Analytics and Real Time Computation Algorithms" will be taught by visiting Professor Peter Golubtsov in dual delivery format, both face-to-face on campus as well as online.

Experimental course M491-03 "Cognitive Computing Algorithms (with IBM Watson)" as well as regular course M491-02 "Big Data Projects" will involve students’ work in groups on various real life problems submitted by local and national businesses and research groups within the UM.

"Big Data Projects" class was already successfully taught by Professor Brian Steele in the spring semester of 2014. The following projects were addressed by the students together with mentors from industry and research groups as part of that class:

(1) Estimating of inter- and intra-company teleconference usage from incomplete log files. Submitted by Dan Cripe, ATG and Francisco Rodriguez, InterCall.

(2) Investigation and development of algorithms for predictive analytics. Submitted by Kegan Rabil, GCS.

(3) Investigating the feasibility of predicting churn among telecom customers from usage and case/trouble tickets. Submitted by Jorge Watson, ATG.

(4) Development of software to estimate the height of the atmospheric inversion layer from radiosonde transmissions. Submitted by Jennifer Fowler, NASA Outreach.

(5) Analyzing the relationship between mobility, pain, and barriers encountered by persons with disabilities using data collected by personal data recorders. Brought by Craig Ravesloot, U Montana Rural Institute.

Projects for the spring 2015 class are being solicited from interested businesses and researchers.
