Brace yourself. Tournament defending champion Alaskan Smoked Porter faces what could be its stiffest challenge of 2003 in Montana’s Moose Drool Brown Ale.

Moose Drool reached The Saloon finals by steamrolling Abita Turbodog, scrambling past micro giant Pete’s Wicked Ale and outdueling Texas stalwart Saint Arnold Brown. Brewed by big Sky Brewing in Missoula, Moose Drool is the best selling draft beer brewed in Montana.

Alaskan Smoked Porter has barely been challenged while defeating two porters and Sprecher’s Black Bavarian Lager. First brewed to recreate what a porter would have been like in Alaska 100 years ago, when Alaskan breweries made their own malt by drying it over fires built from indigenous (in this case alder) woods, Smoked Porter has gone on to be the most decorated beer ever at the Great American Beer Festival.
