In rare move in Wyoming, Converse County puts its books online

Converse County Treasurer Joel Schell is a numbers guy.

He enjoys poring over reams of data and figures, spotting the trends and teasing out the tales they have to tell.

Last week, the county launched a page on its website that lets people play with data as basic as Converse County’s total revenue or as complex as what each department spends on overtime pay.

"With the boom going on here, we’ve had a lot of interest in our revenues and expenses, how much is coming into the county’s coffers and where it’s going to," Schell said. "We have budgets and audits like everybody else, but it seemed like a better way to let people take a look at what was going on and answer those questions for themselves."
