City Club Missoula Presents: November Ballot Referendum To Repeal Same Day Voter Registration: Yes Or No?, 10/13

Monday, October 13, 2014

11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Doubletree Hotel Edgewater Missoula,

100 Madison St.

Montana Secretary of State Linda McCulloch, a Democrat, and Republican State Senator Champ Edmunds will debate Election Day voter registration at the October City Club Missoula forum. The focus of the discussion is LR 126, the ballot referendum that if passed, would repeal Montana’s Election Day voter registration law and replace it with one that ends voter registration on the Friday before Election Day. Edmunds will argue to end same day registration, (a yes vote on the referendum), and McCulloch will support the current practice allowing citizens to register when they arrive at the polls to vote (a no vote on the referendum).

Montana adopted Election Day registration in 2005. In 2011, Gov. Brian Schweitzer vetoed a legislature-passed bill to eliminate same day registration. In the 2013 session, the Legislature passed a bill to bring the issue to the voters Nov. 4, 2014.

The timeliness of this forum provides citizens the chance to hear major arguments for and against same day registration, as well as the opportunity to ask questions of the presenters, a characteristic of all City Club forums. Geoff Badenoch will moderate the discussion.

McCulloch was elected Montana’s first woman Secretary of State in 2008. She has been a teacher and school librarian and served two terms as Superintendent of Public Instruction as well as three terms in the Montana House of Representatives where she was on the judiciary, highways and transportation, local government, education and house rules committees. She has M.A. and B.A. degrees from the University of Montana.

Edmunds was first elected to the Montana House in 2010 and re-elected in 2012. He serves on the House Appropriations Committee. He grew up in South Carolina and moved to Montana after serving in the United States Navy from 1984-1994. Edmunds has a B.S. degree in business from the University of Montana and works as a mortgage consultant.
