Montana young people creative in business ventures

Madison, 27, and Lake are part of the trend of millennials starting businesses.

That cadre of about 77 million people born between 1980 and 1999, millennials have proven to be entrepreneurial machines. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s "The Millennial Generation: Research Review," in 2011, 29 percent of new businesses were started by people between the ages of 20 and 34.

National data suggests many millennials are beginning their own businesses out of necessity. Older millennials were already in the workplace when the Great Recession struck in 2008, while younger millennials were just finishing college and looking for jobs. But regardless of the age, they all watched as the stock market tumbled and banks were bailed out. As a result, data suggests millennials are less trusting of the status quo and are striking out on their own.
