Montana universities push to grow research

The Montana University System is making a new push to expand scientific research in Montana to benefit both students’ education and the state’s economy.

Commissioner of Higher Education Clay Christian told the Board of Regents, meeting in Havre, that the University System is launching a new research initiative and also planning to ask the 2015 Legislature for a "significant investment" in research.

"It’s important to the Montana economy," Christian said. Research already under way at Montana campuses contributes $160 million to $200 million a year to the economy, he said, spending primarily money that comes from the federal government and other sources outside the state.
