Missoula looks at Butte water system: Key players see similarities, differences in two operations

In the 1980s, you could scrub down in a bathtub in Butte without getting all that clean.

"You’d go take a shower over there, and it would shock you because the water was brown," said Milt Datsopoulos. "You’d come out dirtier than before you took the shower."

Water came to town from the Big Hole River in giant wooden pipes, and it was cheap, around $9 a month, said Jim Kambich. The problem, though, was no one fixed the pipes when they broke, they were old and falling apart, and they left wood chips and slivers in the water.

"The only thing keeping fish out of our pipes was a screen – and some chlorination," Kambich said.
