New Leaf Brings High Tech to the Environmental Movement Environmentalists

Environmentalists find an unlikely ally in the fight for clean air and safe water.

New Leaf Environmental, a high tech startup based out of Missoula, Montana, is planning to change the way nonprofits, local governments and individuals wage environmental battles. New Leaf uses a wide range of WiFi-enabled sensors to monitor for dangerous chemicals in areas where industrial pollution is suspected. The resulting data is fed into New Leaf’s geospatial model that provides robust analysis at a fraction of the cost of traditional environmental surveys.

This development may represent a shift in power between corporations and communities that accuse them of polluting. Corporations are often allowed to self-regulate partly because of the high cost of enforcing regulations, often leading to distrust between the parties. New Leaf’s technology will allow the concerned individual or community to monitor for themselves as well as sharing the information on the Web in real-time, ultimately leading to greater transparency and improved insight.

"The future of the environmental movement is dependent on its ability to produce accurate, robust data at low costs and communicate those findings to the concerned public. The rapidly deflating costs of hardware and software used in our solutions makes them increasingly cost-effective for even the smallest organization or individual to implement. Fighting environmental issues is so often a case of ‘not enough information’. Not anymore."
-Matt Gangloff, New Leaf Co-Founder.

New Leaf is preparing to bring its solutions to the open market this summer. Representatives will be touring the natural gas fields of Colorado in Mid-April, meeting with scientific thought leaders and organizations interested in implementing high tech, low cost environmental monitoring solutions in their advocacy efforts.
