Partnership with National Geographic Creates New Opportunities to Market Montana – "Where the Locals Go" online hub

The Montana Office of Tourism (MTOT) has extended its domestic and international reach under a partnership with National Geographic, which has selected Montana to be the first U.S. destination featured on its new "Where the Locals Go" online hub.

"Where the Locals Go" connects National Geographic’s more than 26 million global unique visitors per month with authentic Montana experiences. It blends content written by local experts with on-the-ground updates from National Geographic staff on assignment. Articles, photos, and an interactive map highlight some of the state’s lesser-known experiences. In addition to sharing the best of Montana year-round, new content will launch to correspond with each season.

Jeri Duran, Administrator of the Montana Office of Tourism, said the partnership supports the office’s mission to drive visitation and generate new money for Montana’s economy. Last year, nonresident visitors spent more than $3.6 billion while traveling in Montana.

"National Geographic is an internationally respected brand whose audience is a perfect match for the geotraveler profile we market to," she said. "We’re honored to be the first U.S. destination to receive this dynamic presentation of engaging content."

The partnership also supports the office’s ongoing effort to promote tourism to all parts of the state and across all seasons. It is a major part of the "Step out of Bounds" warm season marketing campaign, which originally launched last year.

This year, the Montana Office of Tourism is focusing the campaign on social engagement by promoting #MontanaMoment, a hashtag that invites real Montana visitors to join the conversation by sharing their breathtaking experiences on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr. Montana’s 2014-2015 Official Guidebook, which released mid-February, includes content submitted using the hashtag and features a cover photo chosen by fans.
