This report on regional entrepreneurship was just published by the Kauffman Foundation. It dispels many myths related to startups. Here is the report and following are some of the important conclusions:

Report on Factors that Boost Metro Startup and Growth Rates Dispels Myths, Emphasizes Importance of Education http://www.kauffman.org/newsroom/2014/01/report-on-factors-that-boost-metro-startup-and-growth-rates-dispels-myths?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Opticast&utm_campaign=Ideas_At_Work_1_30_14

1. The public sector has little impact on the rate of startups in a community. Particularly interesting is their conclusion that high levels of university research and patents do not impact the rate of startup formation.

2. High rates of high school graduation and a higher fraction of college graduates in the community have a positive impact on entrepreneurship rates.

3. Public venture capital funds have little influence on the startup formation in communities.

I guess the message is that the public sector cannot successfully "force feed" startup ventures. But, the private sector can make a huge difference. For more on that, I suggest reading Brad Feld’s book:
Startup Communities: Building an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Your City http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_3_9?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=brad%20feld%20startup%20communities&sprefix=brad+feld%2Caps%2C305

I think this Kauffman report and Brad’s book provide useful information on our learning to better understand what we can do to encourage startup formation in Montana.
