The acquisition, expected to be completed by the end of March, will trigger a venture capital investment of $50 million into SCP Global and give the company access to a $20 million line of credit.

SCP Global officials declined to disclose terms of the deal or the venture capital partners involved until the transaction is completed.

The acquisition involves the Wet Products division of Mattson Technology, a California-based firm that also makes semiconductor equipment. Those operations and intellectual property connected to that division will add to the capabilities of SCP´s technology, product line, manufacturing and customer service, a company statement said.

“This acquisition represents a significant milestone in our efforts to further expand our global footprint,” CEO Mark Peterson said.

SCP Global is the second largest supplier of surface preparation equipment in the world for the semiconductor industry. The equipment is used to etch, clean and strip films and surfaces of silicon wafers used to make electronic chips.

The Boise company, which has undergone several work force reductions in the last two years, has about 450 employees worldwide, compared to about 1,100 at its peak two years ago. There was no information available on Friday about how many workers the Mattson acquisition would add to SCP´s worldwide work force.

Mattson, traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol MTSN, reported a loss of $94.3 million on sales of $203.5 million for 2002. That compares to a loss of $336.7 million on sales of $230.1 million in 2001.

SCP Global is a privately held company and does not disclose financial results.
