Governor Steve Bullock and the Montana Department of Commerce Encourage Communities to "Shop Small" This Saturday

First there was Black Friday, then Cyber Monday, and now there is Small Business Saturday® – a day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year. Governor Steve Bullock and the Montana Department of Commerce are encouraging all Montanan’s to "shop small" this upcoming Saturday, November 30th.

"Main Street Montana businesses are the backbone of our economy. They create jobs for thousands of Montanans, and support vibrant communities," Bullock said. "Small Business Saturday is a great opportunity to not only support your local businesses, but also to find some amazing Made in Montana gifts for your loved ones."

"By shopping at the small businesses in our communities, we help create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods," said Montana Department of Commerce Director Meg O’Leary. "We encourage everyone to go out this Saturday and support Montana’s locally-owned businesses."

The Department asked several local small business owners about the significance of the day, and all were positive and enthusiastic about the benefit it brings to both their businesses and the communities.

"What’s so great about Small Business Saturday is that it brings more attention to our local businesses," said Emily Free Wilson, ceramic artist and owner of Free Ceramics in Helena. "It’s great to see people rallying around our local businesses during the holiday season. I say we make every Saturday a Small Business Saturday!"

To identify products that are made close to home, individuals can keep an eye out for the Made in Montana sticker. The Department’s Made in Montana program helps build recognition for products that are "authentically" Montana. There are over 2,300 program participants producing Montana products today, including everything from food and beverage producers to vehicle and machinery parts fabricators; software and online management companies to log home builders; fine artists; canvas tent makers; and so many more.

To aide in the search for local goods, individuals can find some of the best products Montana has to offer through Made in Montana’s searchable directory at http://www.madeinmontanausa.com/ProDir.asp.
