Invitation to join the Montana Data Cluster Discussion – Montana Jobs Summit

Big Data is like teenage sex: everybody talks about it, nobody really knows how to do it, everyone thinks everyone else is doing it, so everyone claims they are doing it….

As Mr. Mcquire said to Dustin Hoffman in "The Graduate" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSxihhBzCjk "I just want to say one word to you…. plastics."

Now plastics has been replaced by the new word … "Data" and Montana is seeing the beginning of a focus on this area by businesses, education and government. We’ve had sparks of activity in other areas but have not successfully developed a state-wide vibrant technology focused business cluster. We’d like to try with Data.

Mike Ferrucci of Parsec Data saw this growth and organized 3 conferences where his observations were confirmed by the number and variety of businesses and individuals involved in the area. A panel was then convened at the recent Montana Jobs Summit in Butte where many of you expressed an interest in communicating ideas of how Montana can develop a data focused business effort.

Why try to do this? A single company with a focus on data will have a more difficult time succeeding if it’s isolated from other companies that have anything to do with data. This is how Silicon Vally and other areas became so successful. The companies were able to share industry information, give employment options for employees, create synergies for collaboration and innovation and a host of other benefits.

We’d like to ask you share your thoughts, challenges, questions and comments. This has to be an organic development that’s focused on helping everyone succeed.
We think we need to start with an opt-in listserve so that anything can be shared for input from the group and the group can begin to develop an outline of how to proceed. We need to take advantage of the inherent wisdom in the crowd.

Possible focus areas:

* Attracting new and out of state companies.

* Help to create confidence in using our local service providers.

* Identify job creation opportunities within IT

* Focus on collaboration across the state

* Academia getting in front of talent shortages

* Having public entities assist and support the entrepreneur sector

Please sign up for the listserve:

and please share this with anyone else you think would like to contribute to the discussion and benefit from our collective efforts.

Thank you,

Mike S. Ferrucci
