Montana Tourism Assessment and Planning Program (MTAPP)

Announcing the Montana Tourism Assessment and Planning Program (MTAPP)

The Montana Office of Tourism in partnership with the Montana Main Street Program and MSU Extension’s Community Development Program is inviting communities who want to explore their potential for strengthening tourism as an economic and community development tool to apply to be a pilot project assisting in the development of the Montana Tourism Assessment and Planning Program (MTAPP).

In the pilot project, MTAPP will offer a community a 4-5 month series of presentations, discussions, research assignments for local residents, and assistance locating technical and financial resources needed to accomplish resident-identified, tourism-related projects.

The pilot program will begin in early 2014 and is open to Montana Main Street member communities and MSU Extension communities. Exact start dates will be coordinated with the selected community. At a minimum, monthly meetings will be held on a schedule coordinated with the community representatives. Details on the pilot program offering and the requirements of the community are outlined on the MTAPP application form, which will be sent out to communities within the next week.

One community will be selected as the pilot project from applications received by November 22.

At the conclusion of the process, the community members involved should have:

* A better understanding of the quantity and quality of visitor attractions and services offered by their community and area.

* A better understanding of who their current visitors are, what attracts them, what they do, how they get their information both before and during their visits.

* A better understanding of the local, regional, and statewide tourism marketing and promotion network and tools available to inspire, orient and facilitate visitors coming to your area.

* A list of potential tourism-related projects that could assist the community in strengthening tourism as a player in their local and regional economy.

* Assistance from the Montana Office of Tourism, Montana Main Street and MSU Extension in identifying and acquiring technical and financial resources needed to accomplish a priority project identified through the process. At this time, there is no guaranteed financial assistance resulting from completing the assessment, but the process and program facilitators will work with the community to make their projects as eligible and competitive as possible for existing funding resources.
