Facing down fiscal policy: Candidates for Missoula mayor discuss business

From helping set the city’s budget to overseeing municipal departments that issue busines licenses and permits, the mayor of Missoula is heavily involved in the business of doing business.

Missoulians will choose between four mayoral candidates in November, when incumbent Mayor John Engen – seeking his third term – goes up against candidates Michael Hyde, Peggy Cain and Dean McCollom.

Engen, a Missoula native, was a city councilman before being elected mayor in 2006.

Hyde is a cannabis legalization advocate and Missoula native. Cain is a retired nurse looking to give back to the city she loves. McCollom is a technical consultant and recent Silicon Valley transplant.

The candidates shared their thoughts recently with the Missoulian about the city’s fiscal policy, how the mayor might help businesses thrive here and about the proper role of a mayor when it comes to economic development. Their answers to our questions are printed verbatim.
