Montana Tech, UMW chancellors issue caution on proposed education plan

Two Montana university chancellors said they understand the reasoning behind a recent education initiative proposed by President Obama, but cautioned that a one-size-fits-all solution might create a new set of problems.

Earlier this week, Obama called for a new government rating system for colleges that would link affordability and performance to federal financial aid.

University of Montana Western Chancellor Richard Storey said he has no problem with his university being held accountable under the initiative, which would rate schools using criteria such as average tuition, student loan debt, graduation rates, and average earnings for graduates, but Storey did sound a cautionary note.

"You just want to make sure to eliminate any loopholes in the ranking system,” he said.
