Butte School District, Fatbeam and MERDI team up for fiber optic cable connection

Students in Butte School District will be able to work faster and think harder come fall semester.

In what promises to be the first of its kind in Montana, the Butte School District and Fatbeam, a high-capacity fiber optic provider, are linking up to bring blazing fast data connections to Butte.

Direct Drilling of Bend, Ore., is already installing new fiber optic cable, which is housed in plastic conduits during burial, near 13 schools spread throughout Butte city limits.

"What we’re doing here is what they’re doing in cities of 500,000 or more," said MERDI president Jim Kambich of the first phase. MERDI is Montana Economic Revitalization and Development Institute located at 65 E. Broadway.
