University of Washington announcing 17 tech spinoffs

Get ready to hear more about startups based on technology developed at the University of Washington.

UW President Michael Young and others are planning to announce on Thursday that 17 such companies were started in the fiscal year that ended June 30.

The pace is faster than expected for the school’s C4C center for commercialization http://depts.washington.edu/uwc4c/ . The center has been operating since 2005 but is getting a higher profile since Young joined the school in 2011, in part because of his success nurturing startups in his previous job at the University of Utah.
