MSU, UM struggle to compete when salaries rank near bottom nationally

Montana ranks last in the nation for the average pay for full professors.
Tom McCoy worked hard for 15 years to attract bright scientists to Montana State University and, despite the state’s notoriously low pay, succeeded in building research on the Bozeman campus up to a $112-million-a-year enterprise.
Now, ironically, McCoy himself has been lured away to Texas, where he’ll earn $100,000 more to do the same kind of work.
