Senator Baucus: Fight to Protect Montana Businesses from Online Sales Tax Not Over

Senator Vows to Work with House Colleagues to Prevent Bill from Becoming Law

Montana U.S. Senator Max Baucus renewed his pledge to prevent this legislation from becoming law, forcing Montana businesses to play tax collector for other states. Baucus said he will work with his colleagues in the House of Representatives to ensure the bill does not become law after it passed the Senate today.

"Small businesses need to focus their time on creating jobs, not playing tax collector for other states. This bill is bad for Montana businesses, and I’m going to keep fighting to make sure it doesn’t become law," Baucus said.

The bill could give any state the right to make businesses across the country collect sales taxes for that state when selling products online. Therefore, businesses in states like Montana – where there is no sales tax – could be forced to spend their time and money collecting taxes for states across the country with no benefit to Montana.

Baucus has been a vocal opponent of the measure. He spoke out against it on the Senate floor several times and successfully worked to delay the final vote that took place in the Senate today.

The bill cannot become law unless it is passed by the House of Representatives and signed by the President.
