Tale of two campuses: Pain at UM, growing pains at MSU

While a drop in student enrollment is forcing the University of Montana to brace for budget cuts, Montana State University has been attracting record numbers of students and is looking for new ways to spend money.

Terry Leist, MSU vice president for administration and finance, said this week that MSU isn’t planning budget cuts for next year.

The 2013 Legislature is still meeting until the end of this month, so things could change, Leist said. However, he added, MSU doesn’t anticipate budget cuts either from the state or from a loss of students.

How many students will actually enroll at MSU won’t be known until the fall. Yet so far, Leist said, "Enrollment is stable to up, so that’s good."

MSU is also hiring, with 34 tenure-track faculty jobs currently posted on its website. http://www.montana.edu/jobs/
