Missoula developing program to address sexual violence and the challenges of the homeless

Greetings,

Today we considered a proposal to fund a full time position for a Relationship and Sexual Violence outreach coordinator. It works out to about $56,000. The committee was supportive of the idea and voted to make that known to the mayor for consideration in the administration’s budget proposal. There was some discussion on whether the cost could or should be shared with the county. Some of the work this person will be doing will most likely involve people living outside of city limits. This is one component within a larger program that does receive some direct county funding so it was not completely clear what would be fair. We’ll here more on this when the budget comes back.

The other item of interest today was the initial presentation on the 10 year plan to end homelessness. This report is the product of the Reaching Home Working Group. Over the last two years they have been studying and working on a plan for our community to implement to end to homelessness rather than manage it. Our community currently expends a huge amount of money caring for the homeless. With a more coordinated and deliberate effort, those resources could be used much more effectively. St. Pat’s alone provides something like $4,000,000 per year on uncompensated care to people with no permanent address. We set a public hearing for 4/15.
