Idaho Agrees to Allow Out of State Timber Sale Bids

On Tuesday, Idaho Secretary of State Ben Ysursa informed
Secretary of State Bob Brown that the State of Idaho has agreed to end the
practice of excluding Montana businesses from bidding on Idaho timber sales.

Rep. Eileen Carney (D-Libby), who recently proposed legislation to level the
playing field in Montana, is pleased with the move. In Montana, state
timber sales are bid openly and competitively by all potential bidders.

"The Montana legislature in the 2001 session passed a resolution sponsored
by Lincoln County Senator Bill Crismore which stated that if Idaho did not
change its law, Montana would implement a similar law. It was this
resolution as well as pressure from the state of Washington that lead to the
change in Idaho’s law.

"This policy change will strengthen business in Montana and create
additional jobs with Montana companies," explained Carney, "It will also
encourage these businesses to stay in Montana while at the same time
increasing the corporate and individual tax revenues that come into this
state instead of Idaho."

The announcement came after Secretary of State Bob Brown contacted the Idaho
Secretary of State about the legislation.
"I’m glad the Idaho legislature has agreed to level the playing field for
Montana timber companies," said Carney. "I have long supported this change
and will continue to support traditional and existing businesses that are
working to improve the quality of life in our state."
