ADUs are a welcome option for Missoula

Call them granny flats, mother-in-law apartments, echo houses or accessory dwelling units – these small apartments that are an extension of an owner-occupied single family home have been with us for a long time. They have remained very much a part of the historic fabric of Missoula’s urban neighborhoods and continue to serve a very real housing need in spite of the fact that they were disallowed by zoning more than 40 years ago. The resurgence of these small-scale homes in communities across this country has been driven by significant changes in our economy, demographics and lifestyles.
