Broadband Improvement Could Fuel Insourcing

The U.S. government has funded the development of broadband Internet access to previously underserved areas. Beyond giving high-speed Internet access to people in those areas, the addition of broadband could stimulate the development of technology centers of excellence, call centers and other outsourced technology services by outsourcing firms and large corporations looking for low-cost labor in the United States.

Over the past three years, stimulus bill funding has fueled construction and upgrading of over 78,000 miles of broadband infrastructure, providing access to more than 510,000 new broadband subscribers, the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration announced Wednesday. According to an August report study from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, approximately 19 million people live in areas where highspeed Internet isn’t available.
