Education showdown – Montana public schools vs. charter schools

A showdown is shaping up in Montana over educating kids, with advocates of greater choice for parents preparing to go head-to-head with public-school supporters, who see the effort as "privatization" and destructive of a strong education system.

The 2013 Legislature is barely a week old, yet already both sides are gearing up for a major fight over charter schools, tuition tax credits and scholarships. These would use tax dollars to support kids in private schools or create private-type schools funded with public money.

During the 2012 election, Democratic candidate Bullock rejected Republican opponent Rick Hill’s education reform ideas, including charter schools and tuition tax credits, saying they would mean “defunding, devaluing and dismantling public education.”
