Montana Career Opportunity – Tenure-track position in Geographic Information Science – The University of Montana

The Department of Geography at The University of Montana invites applications for a tenure-track position in Geographic Information Science at the Assistant Professor level to start August 2013. The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of research, publications and teaching experience. A Ph.D. in Geography or a closely related field is required by June 2013. This position serves as the heart of the Department’s and University’s established GIS and Cartography program. Our new hire will have an enthusiastic vision to lead this program into the future. We seek candidates with a strong background and training in the technical and conceptual aspects of geospatial technologies. A solid research agenda that complements or expands our existing departmental and university strengths is required. A candidate with demonstrated ability to obtain external funding and whose research aligns with the University’s strategic goals of global leadership is preferred.

We seek candidates with a firm commitment to undergraduate education and graduate student mentoring. Courses to be taught by the successful candidate will include upper-level and graduate courses in cartography, vector GIS, and one’s area of specialty. The ability to teach WebGIS, spatial statistics, programming, and/or database skills would be of advantage. Knowledge of the ESRI product suite is required, but expertise with other software, including Open Source options, is preferred.

Our department has over 80 undergraduate and 30 graduate students. In cooperation with the College of Forestry and Conservation, we offer a Certificate in Geographic Information System Sciences and Technologies that graduates more than 20 students annually. This individual will be expected to work with the Certificate Committee and Coordinator to help support an innovative and integrated curriculum that enhances our current successful GIS and Cartography program.
