Education’s direction at stake in Montana election

When it comes to the key issues in the 2012 election, education is often eclipsed by the economy.

Yet in the Bozeman area, one of the biggest economic engines is education.

Montana State University, the area’s largest employer, has 3,000 employees, 14,660 students and spends $501 million a year.

The Bozeman School District is one of the city’s three largest employers (along with MSU and Bozeman Deaconess Hospital). It has 600 employees, 5,900 students and $72 million in spending.

A lot is at stake for Montana students, parents, schools and universities in this election, candidates and education advocates agree.
