Senior Investment Analyst

Bitterroot Capital Advisors, LLC http://www.bitterrootcapital.com – Great Falls, Montana Area
Job Description

With offices in Bozeman, Montana and San Francisco, Bitterroot Capital Advisors, LLC ("BCA") is a Registered Investment Advisor seeking a Senior Investment Analyst for our Bozeman-based head office.

Background:

BCA is searching for a talented and motivated senior investment analyst to be an integral member of our team to help support our growth. The right candidate must have the temperament to thrive in our collegial, professional, analytical, business culture and enjoy interacting with highly professional committed co-workers who enjoy working together, value collaboration, and are passionate about providing our institution-sized private clients with highest quality financial and investment advice.

A core part of our value involves developing tailored investment strategies and providing access to best-of-class investment managers, in both traditional and non-traditional asset classes, globally. BCA develops customized asset allocation and investment strategies for our clients for whom we identify and recommend various third-party managers, each with various mandates – the sum or which make up our clients’ portfolios.

In this context, BCA develops criteria for identifying and selecting investment managers to execute various mandates for our client portfolios. We use both internal and outside research resources to identify such managers – both traditional and non-traditional — to form the diversified global portfolios we oversee. These investments include mutual funds, other pooled investments, segregated accounts, hedge funds, limited partnerships and individual securities. Our research process includes defining client-specific criteria, running database screens, issuing requests for information, interviewing portfolio managers, evaluating performance, conducting other due diligence and reviewing regulatory information. Our analysts summarize their research in the form of written reports for both internal and client use.

Our goal: to define investment theses and then identify best of class investments through a rigorous investigation and related due diligence, conducted by honest and open internal discussion to both inform our team and assure independent and objective recommendations to our clients.

Responsibilities:

Collaborate with BCA Principals on portfolio construction and strategy.

Model risk and return behavior of various asset allocation strategies, each tailored to an individual client’s needs.

Non-Traditional investments: Identify potential manager candidates via quantitative, qualitative, or other techniques. This includes finding "undiscovered" alternative managers within previously identified sectors/strategies.·

Traditional investments:

* Utilize and leverage, as appropriate, manager research conducted by affiliated firm(s) under contract with BCA.

* Consider fit of various investment manager candidates for our client portfolios. Potential manager universe includes both firms covered by our research affiliate(s) as well as other managers from virtually any source.

* Review investment research and diligence provided by third party research firm for completeness and to identify remaining areas for diligence.

* Screen investable manager universe on a quantitative basis.

For all investments:

* Conduct face-to-face and conference call due diligence meetings with managers – both existing and prospective.

* Conduct fundamental and qualitative manager due diligence.

* Monitor existing managers within BCA client portfolios.

* Create performance and risk analytics reports.

* Write research reports on current and potential managers.

* Present and recommend managers to BCA Principals.

The Senior Investment Analyst position carries additional responsibilities, including mentoring other BCA professionals, editing reports, and spearheading research initiatives.

This role requires occasional travel.

Desired Skills & Experience

Eight-plus years of experience in investment research, preferably researching managers of alternative strategies.

Bachelor’s degree demonstrating critical thinking, preferably in Economics, Finance, Mathematics or Business.

Preferred: MBA, CFA (or working towards), CAIA or other relevant industry certification.

Strong quantitative background with solid understanding of statistical techniques.

Strong oral and written communications skills.

High level of professionalism, personal integrity and values.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
