City Club Missoula Forum, Bonneville Power Administration At 75: The Legacy Of Columbia River Hydropower, 5/14

– A talk by Bill Drummond

When President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Bonneville Project Act in 1932, it was a revolutionary idea: The power of the Columbia River could bring down the barriers between the rural poor and dreams of a better life by providing electricity at cost, rather than for profit. Today, BPA hydroelectric projects are part of life in western Montana, providing wholesale power to 100,000 Montana homes and businesses through publically-owned electric utilities. Hydroelectric projects such as those at Libby and Hungry Horse supply power to Montanans through Mission Valley Power, Missoula Electric Co-op and others. Today, BPA is taking on the challenge of integrating alternative sources of power, including more than 4,000 megawatts of wind-generated power, into their system.
